In the 1950's and 60's America went through radical social changes. The most prominent change being the signing of a Civil Rights bill. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was only made possible by the work of activists who moved to bring up problems that no one seemed to care about. Through non-violent protest the public became aware of a major problem. This awareness ultimately led to the desegregation of America, but it would not be possible without the public's outcry.
Doris is Coming is a short story about a young black girl growing up during the Civil Rights movement. The main conflict in the short story is an internal one for Doris, the main character, that has and will always have its effects on society. Doris is conflicted whether or not to act on her feelings about the Civil Rights movement. She decides to take part in a peaceful protest known as a sit-in. Although Doris herself is unsuccessful this method was instrumental during the Civil Rights movement.
